Detoxification and Withdrawal Management

There are 40 beds within our Detox & Withdrawal Management units. These units are designated to help individuals struggling with intoxication or withdrawal. The teams on this unit can assist with referrals to other programs within the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment and external sources. We have clinical and non-clinical staff their to assist individuals with their needs and meet them where they are in treatment.

Detoxification

The Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment’s Detoxification Unit is committed to treating each client as an individual, to confront the illness rather than the individual, and to offer hope and opportunity to anyone with the desire for recovery. It is the policy of the Detoxification Unit to provide medically safe detoxification from alcohol and other drugs to any Minnesota resident found in need.

Services Provided in Detox include:

  • Treatment of Intoxication and Withdrawal by medical staff through physical assessment, monitoring of physical/emotional/behavioral status, and medication administration.
  • 24/hr. monitoring of all clients within the unit.

Withdrawal Management (Pathfinder)

The Withdrawal Management Program (formerly known as the Pathfinder Unit), is a licensed program that provides short-term care on a 24-hour-a-day basis for the purpose of providing clients safe withdrawal from alcohol, opiates and other drugs and facilitating access to Substance Use Disorder Treatment as indicated by an assessment of needs. The Withdrawal Management Program’s medical providers possess a Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 Waiver from SAMHSA for Substance Abuse Treatment. The medical providers work on-site and are available on call 24-hours a day.

The Withdrawal Management Program is located at 1402 E Superior Street in Duluth, MN. To reach the nursing staff with questions about admission, please call 218-529-3455.

Services Provided in Withdrawal Management include:

  • A licensed practical nurse or registered nurse on site 24 hours a day
  • An initial health assessment conducted by a nurse upon admission
  • Medical observation, evaluation and stabilization planning and services during the withdrawal process
  • Substance Use Disorder treatment with medications for Opioid Use Disorder
  • Access to medications administered by trained and licensed staff to manage withdrawal
  • Screening for Substance Use Disorder
  • Comprehensive Assessment for Substance Use Disorders
  • Stabilization Plan, Stabilization Plan Update and Discharge Plan
  • Referrals to appropriate Substance Use Disorder treatment services, mental health services, economic assistance, social services, prenatal care and other health care services, and more case management connection with community resources
  • Referrals to a community suboxone provider or referrals to Clearpath Clinic (methadone and behavioral therapy)
  • MN Sure and other insurance related assistance
  • Client education including information on the effects of alcohol and other drugs on unborn children; tuberculosis, HIV and other infectious diseases, symptoms of overdose and Narcan training; Hepatitis C treatment and prevention; nicotine cessation; and long-term withdrawal issues related to use of barbiturates and benzodiazepines
  • Peer Recovery Support services to assist clients in gaining sober support as well as act as a role model of wellness, personal responsibility, self-advocacy and hope
  • Comprehensive Medication Management services with a Clinical Pharmacist

  • Admission Criteria for Detox & Withdrawal Management

    • Meet ASAM WDM.3.7 criteria 
    • Are impaired as a result of intoxication
    • Are experiencing physical, mental, or emotional problems due to intoxication or withdrawal from alcohol or drugs (including urges and cravings to use)
    • Are at high risk for relapse and are experiencing cravings and urges to use
    • Are being held under apprehend and hold 
    • Are committed under 253B and need temporary placement
    • Are held under emergency hold or peace and health officer hold
    • Need  to  stay  temporarily  in  a  protective  environment  because  of  a  crisis  related  to  SUD.
